Discovery Farm

Jan 10, 1993

Discovery Farm is a parcel of land carved from Second Discovery, land patented in 1729 by Vachel and Joseph Howard. These acres also claimed family names such as Dorsey, Warfield, Hobbs, Inglehart and Linthicum. The one-story fieldstone homestead was built by William Hobbs in 1760, then called ‘Hobbs Lot’. The second two-and-one-half story fieldstone main portion was erected in 1816 by Edward Englehart. The last cedar frame addition was constructed in 1965 as Fred Rhinelander took possession.

The five-bedroom home features a sunken kitchen with fireplace, four additional fireplaces and an attached greenhouse. At one time the property was called “The Herbiary” as the family residing there raised both herbs and bees. Other features are its sunken formal herb garden and an acre pond with an earthen dam and foot bridges.

Discovery Farm is located at 12549 Folly Quarter Rd., Glenelg, MD. Discovery Farm (The Herbiary) is listed as a Maryland Historical Trust Property. The show house was open from September 25 to October 24. The Chairman was Virginia Kinney.
