MacAlpine was a well-preserved example of a post-bellum country house of the Howard County gentry. The architect is unknown, but the mansion has features similar to Temora and to St. John’s Episcopal Church, both designed by Norris Starkweather.
Built in 1868 as the home of James MacKubin, an Ann Arundel County attorney for his second wife Gabriella Peter Mackubin, the great- granddaughter of Martha Washington. The MacKubins raised five children there and the last of their children, Ella, an unmarried daughter, lived there until her death in 1946. The property was then sold and subsequently subdivided into the present Dunloggin neighborhood.
The house is located at 3621 Mac Alpine Rd. Ellicott City, MD. 21042’ MacAlpine was registered on The National Register of Historic places November 9, 1904. The Show House was held from October 12 to November 3. The chairman was Enalee Bounds.
